Brandenburg Division: Commandos of the Reich by Eric Lefevre,
In addition to its well-known conventional troops like the panzers, panzergrenadiers and paratroopers, the German armed forces in World War II also made extensive use of special forces units. Reporting directly to Admiral Canaris, head of military intelligence, Germany's special warfare troops were concentrated in the Brandenburg Division. The Brandenburgers exhibited the rapid mobility, initiative and endurance of the British commandos and American rangers. However, the capabilities of the Brandenburgers also made them ideal for use in dubious activities on the fringes of legitimate warfare. Their superb linguistic skills led them into the areas of espionage and subversion during operations in Egypt, Iraq, South Africa, Turkey and elsewhere. The best-known Brandenburg operations were during invasions such as those of Belgium and the Netherlands, where they seized bridges and other key points while wearing enemy helmets and jackets. This use of foreign uniforms and other Brandenburg tactics were clear violations of the rules of war, but their influence on later special operations around the world is obvious. With the downfall of Canaris and the SS takeover of military intelligence the Brandenburgers were converted into a regular panzergrenadier division. In order to continue their unconventional operations, many of the division's best men then transferred to Otto Skorzeny's SS special forces unit. Eric Lefevre has made unprecedented use of European contacts and illustration sources to cut through the legendary and propaganda that has marred some previous accounts of these remarkable troops.

Special Forces: The Men, the Weapons, and the Operations by David Miller,
This heavily illustrated volume covers in detail the elite special forces of the world, as increased responsibility for military operations falls on these smaller units of well-trained troops equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and equipment. Some units will be well-know to most readers, such as Britain's Special Air Service and Special Boat Squadron, America's SEALs and Delta Force, Germany's GSG-9, Russia's Spetsnaz, and France's Foreign Legion. Many readers will also learn for the first time about numerous other units, such as Israel's Sayerer Metkal, Egypt's Task Force 777, Argentina's Halcon Brigade, and Mexico's Force F "Zorros." Organization, selection, training, uniforms, weapons and equipment are covered for each unit. Maps, drawings, photographs and cut-away diagrams illustrate equipment and active operations. Famous missions such as the Scud missile hunt, aircraft hijackings, and the classic SAS storming of the Iranian embassy in London are covered with detailed photographs. The most up-to-date information available on NATO special forces in Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro, ignored by the American media, is also included.
