1 Battleship War World
German Naval Vessels of World War Two by U S Naval Intelligence, More than 1,200 illustrations depict the warships of the German Navy during the Second World War in this formerly Restricted document. Reprinted from a very rare contemporary recognition manual, it provides the most graphic and visually extensive reference guide to German warships ever published. Prepared from a wide variety of sources, including intelligence reports and reconnaissance photographs, this book depicts the range of surface ships and U-boats deployed by the Kriegsmarine from the mighty battleship Tirpitz through battlecruisers, 'pocket battleships' cruisers, destroyers and transports to mine vessels and tenders. Included also are the many captured warships under German control. During the Second World War, the US Navy brought recognition training to a state not equalled before or since by any other nation, and this book amply demonstrates the quality of the manuals produced. Photographs, line drawings, silhouettes, beautifully shaded airbrush renderings and photographs of models (some with salient details highlighted), together with detailed plans and profiles of the twenty-five principal classes of German warships, make this an exceptionally interesting and useful reference book. There is even coverage, including a plan and profile, of the aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin as she would have appeared on completion. Of special interest to warship modellers will be the ingenious series of multi-view photographs of models built specifically with recognition details in mind. For warships down to destroyer size, these are seen from eight aerial angles and more than twenty-five hull-up - 'target angle' - perspectives. Throughout the book, similarities and differences between thevarious types of ships are pointed out. Technical information is also provided, as well as armament and armour details, and a concluding section depicts the methods of camouflage painting adopted by the German Navy. Leading naval historian A. D.
The USS Arizona by Joy Waldron Jasper, X "This is no drill! This is no drill! General Quarters! All hands! General Quarters! We're under attack!" In the first terrifying moments of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the crew of the USS Arizona could not have imagined the horrors that awaited them on that "Day of Infamy," December 7, 1941. The battleship Arizona exploded when an armor-piercing bomb ignited its forward munitions, creating a thunderclap that rocked the skies; 1,177 men were killed on the Arizona-more than half the casualties at Pearl Harbor. The USS Arizona gives a riveting account of the terrible events that violently thrust America into World War II. From accounts of what it was like below deck and topside to its fiery aftermath, we see the attack unfold through the eyes of survivors. Accompanied by 16 pages of photographs, this stirring chronicle tells the story of the famous battleship as few other writers or historians have, detailing its construction, covering life on board the peacetime Arizona, and revealing the unshakeable bond its sailors shared with their ship. Most of all, The USS Arizona captures the ship's transformation into a potent symbol of American grit and resolve-a symbol that resonates today at the final resting place of the USS Arizona and the sailors and Marines who perished with her.
